Position Summary

The psychologist will play a key role in assessing, diagnosing, and treating adult individuals charged with criminal offences or allegations of professional misconduct. Candidates are expected to have competence in the psychological assessment and treatment of adults and excellent written skills. Training will be provided in applying those skills to a forensic context.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations using best practices and according to relevant court practice notes, including clinical interviews, psychological testing, mental status examinations, risk assessments, and the use of relevant structured clinical judgment frameworks.

  • Formulate diagnoses and treatment plans tailored to individual needs.

  • Provide appropriate assessment referrals.

 Treatment Intervention and Risk Management

  • Provide individual and (possibly) group therapy using evidence-based methods.

  • Collaborate with the Director, other team members, and mental health professionals to ensure adequate client care.

  • Monitor client progress and risk factors, aiding in legal decision-making. 

Legal Collaboration and Expert Evidence

  • Consult with legal professionals and provide letters and expert reports when requested.

  • Provide verbal testimony in court as required.

  • Liaise with lawyers, corrections officers, parole officers, and other third parties to assist in facilitating forensic decision-making and completing court orders for clients.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments and treatment.

Qualifications and Experience Required 

  • Full registration as a psychologist.

  • Relevant experience in the psychological assessment and treatment of adults.

  • Additional qualifications considered:

    • Doctor of Forensic Psychology or equivalent

    • Forensic Endorsement

    • Post-graduate forensic qualifications and training

    • Specialised training in the assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders, personality disorders, trauma, violence, substance abuse and addiction.

    • Specialised training/experience in assessing risk of violence, sexual violence, stalking, and general recidivism.

    • Familiarity with comprehensive personality and clinical assessment tools. 

Compensation

  • Contract position on offer, but a full-time/part-time arrangement would be considered.

  • Fee distribution is calculated as a percentage of fee charges and is negotiated and reviewed annually.

  • Superannuation and Workcover insurance are provided.

  • Personal assistance will be provided, including calendar management, payments, and client communication.

  • Supervision, training, and professional development opportunities.

Support and Referrals

  • Extensive training is provided to enhance or develop forensic skills.

  • A steady flow of referrals is provided by the practice.
